What a reference is good for
A reference can tell you what your mix is missing or overdoing. It is useful for tonal balance, loudness, and broad translation goals.
It is not useful as a mandate to clone another song’s exact flavor.
What not to do
Do not force a warm mix into a bright one just because the reference is brighter.
Do not use the reference to flatten the mix’s personality.
Use the reference to guide the correction, not to overwrite the source.
